Must-Try Gukbap in Daejeon: Taepyeongso Review by a Gyeonggi Local

From Gyeonggi to Daejeon: A Soul-Warming Gukbap & Yukhoe Adventure.

A Day Trip to Daejeon from Gyeonggi-do 🚅🍲

I took a day trip to Daejeon from Gyeonggi-do!
Arrived at Daejeon Station in the morning via SRT~🎉

I booked my ticket exactly a month in advance as soon as reservations opened.

It's really hard to get tickets for Saturday mornings!

Parking near Daejeon Station

A friend came to pick me up by car 🚗

Instead of using the Daejeon Station parking lot, we used an external one called Cheolma Parking Lot.

FYI: It’s easy to exit from Daejeon Station, but entering can take much longer.

If you're heading back to Daejeon Station or picking someone up there, add at least 30 minutes to your schedule~😃

Lunch at Taepyeongso Gukbap

My friend insisted I had to try this local favorite spot for gukbap (beef soup with rice).
Apparently, even locals wait in line to eat here!

I used to think Sungsimdang was the only famous place in Daejeon, but I was so wrong 😆
There are several Taepyeongso Gukbap locations in Daejeon — we first went to the main branch in Bongmyeong-dong, but the line was too long.

Since we had to catch the train back to Seoul, we switched to the Yuseong branch, located right next to the Yuseong police station — no line at all! 😄
(Though 10 minutes later, there was a queue. Lucky us!)

📍 Yuseong Branch: 140 Munhwaweon-ro, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon

Inside the Restaurant

We arrived at 11 AM, and there were still plenty of seats available.
It’s a popular place, so I recommend going with 2 or 4 people — might be hard for big groups.

Menu Highlights

There are 6 menu items:
Gukbap (beef soup with rice), Naejangtang (organ soup), Galbitang (beef short rib soup), Galbijjim (braised short ribs), Suyuk (boiled beef), and Yukhoe (Korean beef sashimi).

Everything except for suyuk and yukhoe seems to be made with imported beef.
But their Yukhoe and Gukbap are said to be the stars of the show!

Note: Yukhoe cannot be packed or delivered — only dine-in due to freshness.

✅ 4 x Small Gukbap = 36,000 KRW
✅ Large Yukhoe = 18,000 KRW

Also, they do not reuse kimchi or radish kimchi, which is always good to know.

And yes — the kimchi was delicious, a must for a great gukbap place.

Yukhoe & Gukbap Review

If you visit here, definitely try the yukhoe!
The large portion comes with about 20 slices arranged in 4 rows.

Though the portion felt a bit small for the price, the quality and freshness of the Korean beef made it worth it.
The yukhoe had a beautiful ruby red color and literally melted in our mouths!

Shortly after, our hot bowls of gukbap were served.
The broth was rich and flavorful, like a clear beef and radish soup.

Inside each bowl, you get rice and tender beef together — if you prefer to have them separately, ask for darak-gukbap (separate style).
I wanted it spicier, so I added some chili powder from the table. Perfect!

The soup was comforting, deep in flavor, and not overly salty, which I loved.
You also get plenty of meat and broth — very satisfying for 9,000 KRW!
Honestly, this quality would cost at least 12,000 KRW in Seoul.

After our meal, we visited Sungsimdang and bought their famous "Big Echo" bread.

Next time I’ll try the "Little Echo" too 😆

If you're visiting Daejeon and wondering where to eat,
check out Taepyeongso Gukbap in Bongmyeong-dong!

The main branch can have long lines, but the nearby Yuseong branch was manageable.

Taepyeongso Gukbap is a must-visit! 🎉
I’ve been there, had the yukhoe, and it was amazing.

It was a meal totally worth the price —
Though I wouldn’t wait 30 minutes, maybe 10 minutes is just right 😄

The Korean beef yukhoe was super fresh, and since it’s dine-in only, it felt like a signature menu item unique to this place.

If you go to Taepyeongso Gukbap, don't miss the yukhoe! ❤️
