🌸 Travel Tip: Gangwon Gamyeong (Central Traditional Market)

One of the last stops is Gangwon Gamyeong, a historical site with a lovely traditional market nearby.
💐 Don’t miss the lotus flowers here – they’re absolutely beautiful in season and a perfect photo spot.

The lotus flowers at Gangwon Gamyeong typically bloom during the summer, especially from July to August.
The lotus pond in the rear garden of Gangwon Gamyeong is well-known for its full bloom during this season, making it a popular spot for visitors seeking beautiful, serene scenery.

Gangwon Gamyeong was the official government office where the provincial governor of Gangwon-do worked during the Joseon Dynasty.

Today, it has been restored and transformed into a cultural and historical site where visitors can explore Korea’s traditional heritage.

During the lotus flower season, you can enjoy a truly special experience by viewing the blooming pond from Gwanpunggak Pavilion, taking in the serene and beautiful scenery.

Gangwon Gamyeong is one of the stops on the Wonju City Tour Bus route, making it easy to visit this historic site along with other top attractions.

The tour bus departs from Wonju Station and offers a convenient way to explore the city efficiently.

Behind Gangwon Gamyeong, you’ll find the Wonju Traditional Market.
Be sure to try Memil Jeonbyeong (buckwheat pancake) while you're there — it's a local specialty of Wonju!

Memil Jeonbyeong is a traditional Korean dish made from thin buckwheat pancakes that are filled with seasoned vegetables, typically including kimchi, glass noodles, and sometimes meat. The pancakes are soft yet slightly chewy, and the savory filling gives them a flavorful kick without being too heavy.

This dish is especially popular in regions like Wonju, where buckwheat is commonly grown. It's a local specialty that's perfect for a light meal or snack, offering a unique taste of Korean cuisine you won’t easily find elsewhere.

<Recommended Korean Restaurants Near Gangwon Gamyeon>

👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇

I have a restaurant I visited while I was at Gangwon Gamyeong, and I’d love to recommend it. It's not a sponsored post; I’ve already been there three times myself.

It’s a Korean restaurant that also serves hangover soup.

The place is called Simwon Hwangtae restaurant. They mainly serve hwangtae hangover soup, but it's affordable, and the menu is quite diverse.

Please refer to this link for the location

It’s a truly recommended restaurant by locals. It’s a local spot that isn’t recommended at any tourist attractions.

The interior is clean, and it’s a popular spot for bus tour groups to visit.

The reason I recommend this place is that they offer a variety of side dishes. Even though it's not a traditional Korean restaurant, they serve many side dishes as a standard.

They even make them using locally sourced ingredients, and the taste is very traditional. Sometimes, they also have seasonal wild greens.

You get all of this even if you just order the hangover soup! Isn’t that such a great value?

Hwangtae Hangover Soup is a hangover soup made with hwangtae as the main ingredient.

Hwangtae is a traditional Korean ingredient made by salting and drying cod caught in the sea, known for its deep flavor and richness.

While hangover soup is typically eaten to relieve the effects of alcohol, Hwangtae Hangover Soup is a nutritious dish in itself, soothing the stomach and revitalizing the body, making it a favorite among many people.

The broth is refreshing with a deep taste, and the mildness of the hwangtae can be complemented with a spicy kick.

While the Hwangtae Hangover Soup is delicious,
I also recommend the Hwangtae Grilled Fish.

So, when you visit, I recommend ordering the Hwangtae Grilled Fish Set
(12,000 KRW) per person.

The Hwangtae Hangover Soup and Hwangtae Grilled Fish come in a set that’s perfect for one person.

If you have kids, you should also try the Hwangtae Gangjeong. The small size is 20,000 KRW, and it's not spicy. It's sweet and delicious.

You probably won't be able to find this in Seoul, so if you visit here and try it, it'll be a taste you'll remember later

If you make a reservation at least two hours before arriving, you can also enjoy baeksuk (Korean boiled chicken soup).

Baeksuk must be reserved two hours in advance. It's a nutritious dish that Koreans often eat to restore energy. The chicken is slowly boiled until tender, and even the broth is fully enjoyed without waste.

The restaurant is run by a married couple, but they don’t speak English very well.

If you want to place an order, just show them this photo—they’ll understand.

💚This photo shows the Hwangtae Seaweed Soup.
Unlike the Hwangtae Hangover Soup, this one includes seaweed.
It’s a great option for women.

💚This photo shows the Hwangtae Grilled Fish Set, which comes with both grilled hwangtae and hwangtae hangover soup

This is the menu most people usually order.

💚This photo shows the Hwangtae Gangjeong
It’s a sweet dish and not spicy at all.
It’s hard to find even in Seoul,
so I highly recommend trying it here.
