Shellfish BBQ in Seoul? Head to 88 Jogae Near Jamsil
<Seafood Nights in Jamsilsaenae: Grilled Clams & Cold Beer at 88 Jogae>
It’s been a while since I went out with my partner, and we headed to Jamsilsaenae for some shellfish BBQ.
📍 Did you know that pen shell (키조개) is in season from April to June? So we made our way to a proper “shellfish specialty spot” for some seasonal eats.

Inside 88 Jogae
We arrived early on the weekend, and families were already starting to fill the tables.
By dinner time, it was full of baseball fans—there was a game between Lotte Giants and Doosan Bears that day.
After 8 PM, it got really busy. Looks like this is a favorite post-game hangout spot. Definitely a great place for groups.
Menu — Grilled or Hot Pot?
88 Jogae offers both grilled shellfish and hot pot.
One big perk of seafood restaurants with high customer turnover is the freshness of the ingredients — and this place doesn’t disappoint.
Hot pots come in sizes: small / medium / large / special
Grilled shellfish comes in one standard size, but it includes kalguksu (hand-cut noodles).
We ordered the set good for 2–3 people:
-
88 Grilled Shellfish Set (+Kalguksu) — 64,000 KRW
-
Kimchi Roe Rice (Albab) — 7,000 KRW
-
Ice-cold Beer — 6,000 KRW
Review: 88 Grilled Shellfish Set (+Kalguksu)
Right off the bat, they serve generous side dishes.
First came butter-grilled squid — perfect with beer!
The beer here is served ice-cold with floating slush — same with soju. Super refreshing even next to a grill 🔥
Also, you get 1 bottle corkage free per table.
We didn’t bring our own drinks, but if you're with a group, bring a bottle of Chinese liquor like Yantai Kaoliang!
They even sell tonic water, beer, and soju — just bring the Kaoliang to make your own:
▶ Yantai Highball = Kaoliang + Soju + Tonic Water
▶ Yantai Beer = Kaoliang + Beer
Next came the second complimentary dish: a hearty bowl of mussel soup.
The mussels were large, and the broth was refreshing — it felt like a mini seafood hot pot on the side!
Then came the star of the show — the assorted grilled shellfish platter:
-
Shrimp
-
Pen shell
-
White clams
-
Scallops
-
Tongue clams
And we didn’t even have to grill them ourselves!
A staff member came and did everything: grilling, seasoning, and even showing us how to eat them.
This was a game changer. Last time we grilled ourselves in Oido and ended up burning everything 😅
They even topped scallops with green onions, cheese, and gochujang — it was delicious and well-balanced.
Large pen shell meats were placed right on top of shells in front of us, so we just had to pick them up with chopsticks and eat!
At one point, they found an empty scallop shell and brought us a replacement without us even asking. Super honest service 🙏
Every piece was fresh and flavorful — even my partner, who rarely eats seafood in spring, kept going back for more!
Can't Forget the Carbs 🍚🍜
Once we had our fill of shellfish, our Korean instincts kicked in: we needed rice.
The grilled shellfish set includes kalguksu, but that’s served last — so we ordered kimchi roe rice (albab) to tide us over.
It arrived in just 5 minutes — crispy, well-cooked rice with proper toppings. This wasn’t just a filler dish; it was a legit albab.
Later, the staff made a gratin using the remaining shellfish and sauces. We were asked whether we wanted to eat it grilled or as gratin — and of course, we chose gratin! 😋
Ending with Kalguksu
Last course: noodle soup with all the flavor from the shellfish.
We wondered if shellfish BBQ alone would be filling — but yes, we were stuffed!
The set is roughly enough for 2.5 people, and with side dishes, it can easily feed 3.
